Year 1 Math Practice Questions and Topics

Year 1 (ages 5–6) is where Reception's counting sense turns into formal arithmetic. Children extend counting to 50 and beyond, learn number bonds to 10 (the pairs that make 10 — 6 and 4, 7 and 3), and start adding and subtracting within 20, first with objects and number lines, then increasingly in their heads. Place value begins here too, in a simple form: understanding that the number 34 is three tens and four ones, not just "thirty-four" as a single word. Alongside this, children count in steps of 2, 5 and 10, meet basic 2D and 3D shapes, start telling the time to the hour and half hour, measure length and weight informally, and recognise coins.

By the end of Year 1, a child should recall number bonds to 10 without counting on fingers, add and subtract single-digit numbers fluently, count forwards and backwards to 50, and read an analogue clock to the half hour.

The most common sticking point is subtraction, specifically the idea that it isn't just "counting backwards" but can mean two different things — taking away from a group, or finding the difference between two groups. Children who only ever practise the "take away" version often struggle when a question asks something like "how many more are needed," even though it's the same underlying operation. The other frequent difficulty is place value: a child can often add 3 + 4 correctly but not yet understand why 30 + 40 works the same way, because the "tens" aren't yet a solid mental concept.

This builds directly on Reception's counting work and sets up Year 2, where numbers extend to 100 and the times tables for 2, 5 and 10 begin properly — a child who isn't secure in counting in steps by the end of Year 1 will find those tables harder to learn by rote later.

At home, the single most useful thing a parent can do is make number bonds to 10 automatic through quick, repeated, low-stakes practice — a few questions in the car or at breakfast add up over weeks. Real coins for pretend shopping, and pointing out clock times through the day, reinforce the measurement and money strands without needing a workbook.
