Year 2 Math Practice Questions and Topics

Year 2 (ages 6–7) is the year numbers extend to 100 and the times tables begin in earnest. Children work with place value up to 100 (tens and ones), add and subtract two-digit numbers, and learn the 2, 5 and 10 times tables — including the matching division facts, which are often taught alongside but forgotten about. Fractions appear for the first time in a concrete way: halves and quarters of shapes and of small quantities. Measurement becomes more precise too, with length and mass in standard units, telling the time to the quarter hour, and using pounds and pence together rather than just recognising coins.

By the end of Year 2, a child should confidently add and subtract two-digit numbers (with and without carrying/borrowing), recall the 2, 5 and 10 times tables and their division facts, find half and a quarter of a shape or a small number, and read the time to the nearest 15 minutes.

The most common difficulty is column addition and subtraction involving carrying or borrowing across the tens boundary — for example 47 + 8, where the ones digits add to more than 9 and a ten has to be "carried." This is the first time children have to hold two ideas in their head at once (the ones total AND what happens to the tens), and it's genuinely a step up in working-memory demand, not just a bigger number. The second common confusion is division as sharing versus grouping — 12 ÷ 3 can mean "share 12 into 3 groups" or "how many groups of 3 fit into 12," and children who've only practised one interpretation get thrown by questions phrased the other way.

This is the year that makes or breaks times-table fluency going into Year 3, where three more tables (3, 4 and 8) are added on top, and where three-digit numbers replace two-digit ones — so gaps in Year 2's foundations tend to compound rather than disappear.

Parents can help most by turning times tables into short, frequent, spoken practice — reciting the 2s and 5s while doing something else, like walking to school — since rote fluency here saves a lot of cognitive effort later. Splitting a pizza or a bar of chocolate into halves and quarters is also a genuinely effective, hands-on way to make fractions concrete rather than abstract.
