Year 3 Math Practice Questions and Topics

Year 3 (ages 7–8) moves children from two-digit into three-digit numbers, and this is where formal written methods for addition and subtraction really take hold — the column methods taught here are the ones used, in more complex form, for the rest of primary school. Two more times tables are added (3, 4 and 8, on top of 2, 5 and 10 from Year 2), and children begin dividing with remainders, not just exact division. Fractions extend from halves and quarters to tenths, and measurement grows to include perimeter as a concept, not just length. Angles and basic shape properties are introduced too, alongside the first proper data-handling work — reading simple charts and tables.

By the end of Year 3, a child should add and subtract three-digit numbers using a column method, recall the 3, 4 and 8 times tables, divide with an understanding of what a remainder means, and calculate the perimeter of a simple shape by adding its sides.

The most common difficulty is the written column method for subtraction when it requires "borrowing" across more than one column — for instance 302 − 148, where the tens column is a zero and there's nothing obvious to borrow from, so the ten itself has to be borrowed from the hundreds first. This trips up otherwise-confident children because it's a genuinely fiddly procedure, not a conceptual gap. Remainders are the other frequent confusion: children often get the division right but don't know what to do with what's left over, or drop it entirely, because up to now every division question they've seen has divided exactly.

Year 3 sits in the middle of the jump from Year 2's two-digit world to Year 4's multi-digit multiplication and division, so shaky column-method technique here shows up as errors in Year 4 that look like new mistakes but are really this year's gaps resurfacing.

The most useful thing a parent can do is practise the column methods slowly, out loud, narrating each step ("7 take away 9, I can't, so I borrow a ten...") rather than rushing to the answer — the procedure itself needs rehearsing, not just the facts. Real-world perimeter (measuring a garden, a table, a room with a tape measure) also makes that idea stick far better than a worksheet diagram.
