Year 5 Math Practice Questions and Topics

Year 5 (ages 9–10) is a genuine step up in abstraction: children now work with the four operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division) on numbers into the thousands, and fractions, decimals and percentages start to be treated as three views of the same underlying idea rather than separate topics. This is the year percentages are introduced properly for the first time. Measurement extends to area and perimeter of more complex shapes, angles are calculated (not just named), and the first real problem-solving work appears — multi-step word problems that require choosing which operation to use, not just performing one that's already specified.

By the end of Year 5, a child should confidently add, subtract, multiply and divide numbers with up to four digits, convert between simple fractions, decimals and percentages (like 1/2, 0.5 and 50%), calculate the area of a rectangle, and measure or calculate angles.

The most common difficulty is exactly that fraction–decimal–percentage connection: children can often perform each type of calculation in isolation but freeze when a problem mixes them, because they haven't internalised that 0.25, 1/4 and 25% are interchangeable rather than three separate facts to memorise. The second common struggle is multi-step word problems — a child might be able to do both required calculations perfectly on their own, but not know which two calculations a wordy problem is actually asking for, since this is the first year that identifying the method is as much the task as executing it.

Year 5 is deliberately the bridge between Year 4's tables-and-basics focus and Year 6's exam-preparation year, where these same fraction/decimal/percentage conversions and multi-step problems appear constantly and at speed — so this is the year to get genuinely comfortable with them, not just capable.

Parents can help most by discussing real percentages and fractions together in daily life — a discount in a shop, a fraction of a recipe, a football team's win percentage — and explicitly asking "what's that as a fraction/decimal too?" to build the connection deliberately rather than leaving it implicit. For word problems, encouraging a child to explain out loud what a question is asking before calculating anything is often more valuable than checking the final answer.
