Year 6 Math Practice Questions and Topics

Year 6 (ages 10–11) is primary school's exam-preparation year, and the content reflects that: it consolidates and extends everything from Years 3–5 rather than introducing much that's brand new. Children work with fractions, decimals and percentages fluently and interchangeably, use order of operations (BODMAS/BIDMAS) correctly in multi-step calculations, calculate area and volume of more complex shapes, work with ratio for the first time, meet basic algebra (using a letter to stand for an unknown number), plot coordinates, and interpret more complex statistics and charts.

By the end of Year 6, a child should apply BODMAS correctly to a calculation with several operations, convert fluently between fractions, decimals and percentages, solve simple ratio problems, understand what a simple algebraic expression like "3n + 2" represents, and plot and read coordinates in all four quadrants.

The most common difficulty is order of operations — BODMAS is easy to state as a rule but genuinely hard to apply consistently under pressure, especially in a calculation that mixes brackets, multiplication and addition in a way that doesn't match how the child would naturally read it left to right. The second frequent struggle is ratio, specifically distinguishing it from fraction problems that look similar on the surface — "share £20 in the ratio 2:3" is a different kind of calculation from "find 2/3 of £20," and children who've only just met ratio often default to whichever method they're more comfortable with, whether or not it's the right one for the question.

Year 6 exists to consolidate everything primary school has built, and it directly determines how ready a child is for Year 7's move into secondary school, where algebra stops being an occasional topic and becomes a constant thread, and where the pace assumes this year's content is already solid, not still being learned.

The most useful thing a parent can do this year is mixed, varied practice rather than repeating one topic in isolation — since the real skill being tested is recognising which method a problem needs, not just executing any one method well. Working through a few multi-step problems together, out loud, talking through the decision of what to do first, mirrors exactly what Year 6 assessment actually demands.
