Year 7 Math Practice Questions and Topics

Year 7 (ages 11–12) is the first year of secondary school, and mathematically it's where algebra stops being an occasional topic and becomes a constant thread running through everything else. Children formalise work with negative numbers (including calculating with them, not just recognising them), study factors and primes properly, consolidate fractions/decimals/percentages from primary school into more demanding forms, and begin genuine algebra: writing and simplifying expressions, and solving simple equations. Geometry work on angles and area/volume continues at a higher level, ratio is applied more broadly, and probability is introduced as a topic in its own right for the first time.

By the end of Year 7, a student should confidently add, subtract, multiply and divide negative numbers, find factors and prime factors of a number, simplify a simple algebraic expression by collecting like terms, solve a one-step or two-step equation, and calculate a basic probability as a fraction.

The most common difficulty is negative numbers, specifically multiplication and division of them — the "two negatives make a positive" rule is easy to state and consistently misapplied under pressure, especially in multi-step calculations where a student loses track of how many negative signs they've already accounted for. The second frequent struggle is the jump from arithmetic to algebra itself: many students can substitute a number into an expression like "2n + 3" without issue, but struggle to manipulate the expression itself (simplifying, rearranging) because it no longer has one fixed numerical answer to check against, which feels unfamiliar and unanchored after years of arithmetic.

This year sets the tone for the whole of secondary maths — Years 8 and 9 build directly on this algebraic foundation, expanding it into factorising, more complex equations and eventually the full GCSE syllabus, so gaps here tend to widen rather than close on their own.

Parents can help most by normalising algebra as just another kind of arithmetic rather than something mysterious — practising negative number calculations regularly (temperature differences are a genuinely useful real-world context) and encouraging a student to explain what a letter in an equation actually represents, rather than treating it as a symbol to move around by rule alone.
